About our Featured Speaker: Clint Tomsen

Clint Thomsen is a STEM educator based in Tooele, Utah, specializing in Cyber Security, Computer Systems and and Radio Frequency Technologies. He developed a passion for all things “space” as a small child while watching Space Shuttle coverage with his father. Using old hand drawings and old electronics parts, he built a replica bridge of the Starship Enterprise in his childhood bedroom.

While on a religious mission to the former Soviet Union in his late teens, he made a pilgrimage to the landing site of Yuri Gagarin’s Vostok 1 capsule. This experience sparked a fascination with human spaceflight and spacecraft telemetry.

After a career in Information Technology, Clint took a teaching job at a local high school, where he introduced his STEM students to the wonders of space and radio. Each year since 2016, he and his students have built and launched radio trackers to the stratosphere via high altitude balloon. In 2023, his class was selected for a direct amateur radio contact with the International Space Station to take place in April of this year.

When he’s not in the classroom, Clint enjoys camping and traveling with his wife and 6 children. Most of those trips are to Florida’s Space Coast to watch rocket launches. It’s a good thing his family are good sports!

Summary of January 20, 2024 Meeting – Featuring Building Axiom Station with Megan Yang

At our January 20, 2024 meeting we had Nathan Price give a review of the North Houston Space Society over the years. He also talked about the purpose of the group to promote a better understanding of the opportunities that space offers for humanity and for us individually. Greg Stanley gave an overview of recent space news. His monthly talk makes it easier to keep up on the latest space developments. And our featured speaker, Megan Yang, from Axiom come and talk about building Axiom Station. Below you can see the recordings of each of these talks.

Building Axiom Station – Megan Yang

Megan Yang’s family immigrated to the US from Taiwan in 1999. She followed in her father’s footsteps as an engineer and majored in chemical engineering at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, then moved to Houston after graduation. At Axiom Space, Megan is the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) Water Accumulation and Treatment Assembly (WATA) Group Lead, where she oversees hardware design for the water system that recycles astronaut urine, sweat, and condensate, and turning them back to clean water for various crew use, including for drinking. In this role, she provides technical input and oversight of her group’s project scope, cost, and schedule.

Axiom Space is building the world’s first commercial space station, Axiom Station. Construction of Axiom Space’s first habitation module for the commercial space station is underway and is on track to launch its first module to the International Space Station by 2026. Megan Yang, the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) Water Accumulation and Treatment Assembly (WATA) Group Lead, will talk about her role and experience designing the space station to support continuous human presence living in space after the International Space Station’s (ISS) deorbit, which is planned for 2030.
